zInk privacy policy
Last updated: 3 October 2026
zInk is made by Rana ("I", "me"). This policy explains what zInk does with your data. I never receive any of it.
What zInk reads, and why
Each of these is only read on your phone, and only after you allow it:
- Notifications (notification access). To show your notifications on the cover screen, let you read them, reply, open them or dismiss them. zInk keeps no history of them: when a notification goes from your phone, it goes from zInk too.
- Accessibility service. Used for one thing only: to notice when Motorola's own cover home screen appears, so zInk can show itself there instead. It's set to receive window changes from that one Motorola app, and it can't read the content of your screen, what you type, or any other app.
- App usage (usage access, optional). How much you use each app, so the apps you use most are shown first. Only totals per app are used, and only on your phone.
- Calendar (optional). Your next event in the next 12 hours, shown under the clock.
- Do Not Disturb (optional). To switch Focus on and off when you long-press the clock.
- Calls (optional). To call your favourites, or a number you type, from the cover. zInk can't see your call history.
- Favourites. People you choose with Android's own contact picker, which gives zInk only the name and number you pick. zInk can't read the rest of your contacts.
- Display over other apps. To open zInk on the cover screen when you close your phone.
- The list of your apps. Their names and icons, to label notifications and let you choose which apps appear on the cover.
- Approximate location (optional, only if you turn on Weather and choose "Use my location"). See Weather below.
Weather
Weather is off unless you turn it on. When it's on, zInk looks up the current weather at most every half hour, by sending one place to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com), a free weather service: either the city you chose, or your phone's last known approximate location, rounded to about a kilometre. Nothing else is sent with it: no account, no identifier, none of your notifications. zInk never turns on GPS. Searching for a city sends what you type to Open-Meteo's place search. The location's name shown in zInk comes from Android's own geocoder on your phone.
What zInk stores
On your phone only, in zInk's private storage:
- your settings, such as which apps are shown, your categories, the people you pinned and your favourites;
- what zInk learns about how you use notifications, such as which apps you usually open or dismiss. This fades over time and is used only for sorting.
Uninstalling zInk, or clearing its storage, deletes all of it.
Pop-ups while zInk is showing
If you've given zInk the one-time permission used by Max mode, zInk turns Android's pop-up notifications off while it's on the cover (they appear in zInk's list instead), and turns them back on as they were when the phone opens or another app is shown.
Max mode
If you turn on Max mode, zInk changes a few phone settings to save battery (for example background Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning and animation speed). It saves your original values on your phone and puts them back when you turn Max mode off.
Children
zInk isn't directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
